MSA Product Development Process
The following steps generally outline the development of a window shade program from its inception.
- Based on a customers RFQ or RFP (Request for Quotation, Request for Proposal), computer models are created using data from the Technical Section of the RFQ/RFP. The models are created using Solidworks, Catia, or Auto-CAD, depending on program specifications. These models are compiled into an in-house presentation (PDR). This presentation outlines geometry, mechanical components, method of installation into aircraft, and other elements specific to the requirements of the program.
- Management, Design and Sales develop preliminary pricing and scheduling based on an internal Preliminary Design Review (PDR).
- A design presentation is sent to or arranged with the prospective customer. Concept is presented to the prospective customer.
- If necessary, a prototype is created in the R&D department.
- Approval is acquired from customer on form, fit and function of prototype, drawings, and whatever design tools are required to properly present the concept.
- Engineering and manufacturing drawings have multiple purposes, they serve as manufacturing documentation, FAA Certification documentation, vendor documentation, etc.
- Production and deliveries commence based on customer delivery schedule.
- Depending on a project scope, different testing may be required for customer and FAA approval. MSA performs Part 25 burn testing for every customer program, and has completed and passed the most rigorous requirements of RTCA DO-160F for certain commercial programs.
